MATERIALS

We have listed below some standard materials in the sewing industry along with a little information about each.  There are pros and cons in using any one type of fabric in your product, some that might surprise you.

Cottons

Available in different weights, colors and roll sizes.  Durable for inside uses, sews average to fast.  Does fade after washings, collects dirt easily.

Nylons

Available in different weights, colors and roll sizes.  Durable for both inside and outside uses, sews medium fast.  Little to no fading due to washing, collects little dirt.  Water resistant, good transfer capabilities.  Can be ultrasonic welded in most applications.

Lycra, Stretch Fabrics

Light weight, limited colors and roll sizes, expensive.  Various stretch percentages.  Low fading after washing.  Difficult to sew in many applications.  Average to poor transfer capabilities.

Foams

Light weight, difficult to color, available in different sheet sizes.  Can be laminated with any other fabric.  Picks up dirt and moisture easily and difficult to wash.  Most cases not transferable with a heat transfer.

Canvas

Cotton base, available in various  colors, roll sizes and weights.  Can be coated for mildew and water resistance.  Can be difficult to sew when shaping is necessary.

Meshes

Black and White are standard colors all others carry a premium.  Somewhat difficult to cut than other materials.  No Transfers.  Various weights and material make ups.

Leathers

Very expensive, limited colors, dependent on various sizes (difficult to yield and lots of waste), more difficult to cut and sew.  Can be transferred.

Webbing

Black and White standard colors, all others carry a premium.  Different weights, standards are 12pt (light), 16pt (heavy).  Poly pro (least expensive, Nylon (two to three times more expensive).  Widths from 3/8" to 4".  comes in rolls of 25, 50 and 100 yards.  Somewhat transferable, can be silk screened and printed.

Hook and Loop

Most made with nylon base, comes in various colors, Black and White are standard, colors could carry a premium.  Available in widths from 1/2" to 4" standard.  Available in rolls of 25, 50 and 100 yard reels.  Available with pressure sensitive adhesives of various degrees of adhesive qualities.

Neoprene (Wet Suit Material)

Heavy duty material.  Basically rubber laminated one or both sides with any fabric, but standard is cotton or nylon.  Available in various millimeter thickness, standard is 1 to 6 millimeter.

Threads

Different weights, colors, and material makeup.

Zippers

Standard colors are black and white, various widths.  Is purchased by the yard then cut to length, comes in metal, plastic and nylon.  You may purchase the zipper pulls as a separate item.  Sometimes cheaper to install than hook and loop closures.
